Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprossing (EMDR)

em What is EMDR?

EMDR is a form of psychotherapy that helps individuals recover from symptoms and emotional distress caused by upsetting life events. It is a specialized therapy method aimed at alleviating trauma, PTSD, and various emotional issues. EMDR utilizes the brain's innate mechanism for memory and information processing, similar to REM sleep, to diminish the intensity of traumatic memories.

Although the brain is naturally wired to heal and progress from past events, some traumatic experiences can become "stuck." Consequently, any small or significant trigger may prompt the brain to re-enter a fight, flight, or freeze response as if the initial event is recurring and lead to overwhelming feelings. EMDR therapy can help alleviate the impact of these negative beliefs and introduce more positive and beneficial ones.

How does EMDR work?

EMDR helps the brain process “stuck” memories, enabling regular information processing. Therapists often use EMDR to help clients explore and tackle beliefs originating from relational traumas, childhood abuse, and neglect. In EMDR therapy sessions, the therapist directs the client to concentrate on the traumatic event and related emotions. Bilateral stimulation is employed to aid memory reprocessing. By confronting the main problem, EMDR empowers individuals to progress with a restored sense of peace.
