Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)

g What is Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)?

The Safe and Sound Protocol is a powerful listening therapy designed to help regulate the nervous system, so you can better connect with yourself, others and the world around you.

As a practical application of Polyvagal Theory, the SSP acts as a non-invasive, acoustic vagal nerve stimulator, helping to retune the nervous system to better support connection, collaboration and resilience.

The SSP involves listening to specially filtered music through headphones alongside a provider. The SSP has demonstrated benefits for individuals with trauma, anxiety, sensory processing differences and more.

Highlights

  • Dr. Stephen Porges, the creator of the Polyvagal Theory, developed and patented this five-hour auditory intervention.
  • The SSP is a filtered music program that helps us reach the parts of the brain that need regulating for improved functions and behaviors.
  • It aims to decrease sensitivity to sound, enhance auditory processing, and improve behavioral state regulation.
  • It also aids in regulating the body's physiological state, leading to increased resilience.
  • The SSP is often used in conjunction with other therapise to help accelerate and enhance therapeutic outcomes.

Benefits

Using SSP can have various benefits, with results varying depending on the individual. Some people may need multiple sessions to fully experience the effects:

1. Anxiety and depression: SSP helps calm the body's "fight or flight" response, reducing feelings of anxiety, worry, and depression, thereby helping adults manage stress better.

2. Sleep: Many adults report improved sleep quality and duration after SSP sessions, leading to increased energy, improved focus, and overall well-being.

3. Social engagement: Some adults show more interest in social interactions, a better ability to understand social cues, and increased comfort in making eye contact after SSP sessions, which promotes social engagement.

4. Sensory processing: For adults with sensory processing difficulties, SSP can help integrate sensory input more effectively and reduce sensitivities to specific sounds, leading to improved focus and functionality.

5. Immune function: Research suggests that SSP may enhance immune function by reducing inflammation, potentially supporting overall adult health.

6. Better learning: SSP's calming effect and promotion of focus create an optimal environment for adults to learn and acquire new skills more efficiently.

7. Self-regulation: Adults may find it easier to calm themselves, regulate emotions, and make deliberate decisions after SSP sessions, promoting self-regulation.

8. Relationships: With increased social engagement, enhanced self-regulation, and heightened empathy, SSP can help improve adults' relationship skills and make connections more accessible.
